Peak is Peaking

Recently the play of junior guard L.J. Peak has been scintillating – he’s doing the do in multiple aspects of the game. Just ask Thompson.

“L.J. is playing at a really high level right now” opined the coach. “He’s playing really, really well, at both ends of the court…He might sleep through Christmas. That’s just the energy he puts out”.

Offensively, Peak finished with 16 points and six assists, while also pulling down four rebounds. Defensively his work was equally impressive, as L.J. was primarily tasked with stopping sophomore UNCG guard Francis Alonso. Against G’Town Alonso only produced six points, under half his prior production. Making Peak and the Hoyas’ work harder – the team zeroed in on Alonso – were the myriad of ‘floppy’ style screens UNCG deploys to free their best shooter.

“It’s been several games now, he’s guarded the guy whose going to hurt us the most. He was very, very good at locking and trailing, and being right there and being a physical - a hardness to his defense” said Thomspon, who added of Peak “And then he comes down to the other end of the court and we put the burden on him to score also”.

Miller identified the defense on Alonso and junior forward Marvin Smith as key, sharing “We run a lot of stuff on the baseline, give him freedom to come off screens. We didn’t have a lot of success with that tonight. We need him to shoot the ball well for us to beat a good team, he and Marvin Smith. And I looked down and they were a combined o-8 from three. So they did a nice job on Francis…and Marvin”.
