1. The Hoyas are 4-3 so far this year, but have faced a schedule with several "name" opponents. How has the season been thus far?
1... The season has been a roller coaster, with the Hoyas playing well against name foes, in suspect manner vs. non name guys, including Penn State that took them to the woodshed here in DC. As Ewing recently said, he's seen multiple variations of his team. Inconsistently has been the consistency.
2. Along those lines, there was breaking news on Monday that James Akinjo and Josh LeBlanc entering the transfer portal and the school announcing they are no longer on the team. How big of a loss is it for the Hoyas not having those two?
2... Big loss. Akinjo, with his well documented penchant to be selfish in 'money time', was the team's primary ball handler and an overall tough player. He was hard to coach, but was its second best guy, one who was it's best ball screen initiator. Leblanc was the team's energizer bunny, as he's long, aggressive and athletic.
There is a replacement for Akinjo, grad transfer Terrell Allen, though the latter, while more wiling to feed guys is not as dynamic
Nobody really makes up for LeBlanc's loss, particularly if Galen Alexander and Myron Gardner, both implicated in the program's turmoil, are not available.
3. What is Patrick Ewing doing offensively and defensively in his first year?
3...In each of this three years, Ewing has remained true to philosophy, with wrinkles.
Yr. 1, it was playing two scoring bigs off each other, while manning defensively. Pick and Roll defense was more a drop scheme, no pressing
Yr. 2, it was pick and pop for Jessie Govan, out of ball screen, manning defensively. Again drop scheme pick and roll, very little pressing
Yr. 3 it has been pick and roll and post iso, manning defensively. They hard hedge now, while pressing alot.
These are all generalizations of course. But it evidences his desire to run some pro stuff, man defensively, all based on what his guys can do. Zone is not really in the equation, rarely has been.
4. Who are some Georgetown players to watch on Wednesday night?
4...Omer Yurtseven, senior center, MUST dominate. He's shown flashes but has to do so constantly. Can score at all three levels. Gets into dumb foul trouble.
Jamorko Pickett, junior center, must shed my label for him, Enigma Man. He has the tools to be a superhero, but doesn't want to use them. Can play multiple positions, rebound, defend. Just disappears too much.
Allen, has to show he can score in addition to finding Yurtseven and running the team. Must shoulder a lot of the pressure G'Town will face. It's coming. He has to tamp down on the team's excessive number of turnovers, which is also a team concern.
