with the shine of the FF still on the program, I'm not sure if you everyone has carefully looked at the following 3 years -- let's do it:
2007-08
key players:
Roy Hibbert (multiple years starting in NBA)
DaJuan Summers (83 NBA games, 7 starts, early second round pick)
PE Jr (2nd round pick, played many years professionally, D-League all-star
Jonathon Wallace (one of the better PG's in Georgetown history and an all-time shooter)
Vernon Macklin (2nd round pick in the NBA, played overseas professionally)
Jessie Sapp (effective senior guard)
Wright and Freeman (freshmen highly regarded guards)
result: 2nd round loss to the Davidson buzzsaw --
commentary: okay they had Curry which ended a lot of teams hopes, but the rest of the Davidson squad are now lawyers or businessmen -- we had massively more talent but we'll give the pass due to Curry's heroics
2008-09
key players:
Greg Monroe (multiple years starting in NBA, #1 rated high school player, very solid freshman season)
Wright, Freeman and Sapp -- very talented 3-headed guard rotation, discussed above)
Henry Sims (future NBA starter, a disappointment as a freshman however)
Julian Vaughn (played overseas professionally, a very good college player)
DaJuan Summers (discussed above)
Jason Clark (freshman but played 31 games averaging 5.2 pts and shooting VERY well)
result: 16-15 record, first round NIT loss to Baylor following a first round BET loss to St. Johns)
commentary: yes a very young squad but certainly the talent to make the NCAA -- disappointing end
2009-10
key players:
Monroe (1st team Big East, BET all-tourney, 3rd team NCAA -- an absolute college beast)
Wright, Freeman and Clark (probably one of the best 3 guard situations in Hoya history)
Hollis Thompson (future NBA starter played 20 min a game freshman year)
Julian Vaughn and Henry Sims (both contributers as Juniors and discussed above)
note (2 freshmen who would excel in other programs but didn't really contribute -- Sanford and Benimon
result 23-11 including a shellacking in a debacle of a game against Ohio U in the tourney
commentary: really? double digit losses and a huge letdown with this talent? I think Kentucky would have taken this roster
OVERALL: so like I said a lot of people don't look at these years too carefully because the Final Four was recent -- but there are people blaming the talent right now but.....
the talent on these teams was ridiculous and loaded with future NBA talent -- and what did we get for it? a first round NIT exit and two first round NCAA exits to double digit seeds
and trust me it doesn't get better in the following years. this is now a decade of very good talent through the program with no results capped off by the fact that we can't even make post season play any more
