the Hoyas were atrocious on the boards. siena outrebounded them 35-29, with saint center jackson stormo pacing all rebounders with 11 boards (and was top scorer at 25p). Ewing on failing to clean glass: "I
told them if we want to beat elite teams, we can't give up 15 offensive rebounds. they didn't hurt us with it, but...the teams we are going to play agains, we give up 15 offensive rfebonds and we are going to lose".
take: he's right. this team will have to TEAM rebound. mohammed illustrated this by pulling down a GTown high seven. carey and rice both had four. None of those three are strong interior players.
zoning
to close the game, Gtown ran a 2 3 zone. like over the last two and a half minutes. i've constantly asked Ewing bout zone usage or the lack therof over his course as hc. hhah
"This time, Ewing after a wry smile responded "C'mon now. You've seen us play in years past. I prefer to play man. You know you have to be ready to play anything. We will press. I know teams are going to press us. play zone.
"I thought the older group did a great job with the zone. I didn't think the younger guys did as a good a job.
"It's part of our defense. You have to hold certain things in your back pocket (smile)
take: they NEED to zone more often. beaten that drum for years. early returns on sdsu shows me its necessary for thursday!. play it, switch to it. only way to get better at it imo.
