I am a sports fan. I have rooted for teams that have had great runs (Gtown in the 80s, Yankees in the 70s and 90s, Raiders for about 20 years). I have also rooted for teams that have been terribly disappointing: (Texas Football last 5 years, Raiders, last 15 years, Georgetown Lax for last 8 years). The run of this Georgetown basketball program the last 7-8 years has been the most frustrating of them all. This team has underacheived significantly year after year. We all know that. Unlike DePaul or St. Johns, almost every summer they give you hope at the beginning of the year with things like (a) a new offense, (b) DSR returning, (c) Josh Smith transferring etc., only to disappoint again. The way they lose is also so frustrating. So many close winnable games that go the other way. It is emotionally draining to support this team.

However, I am not giving up on Georgetown. Oh, do not get my wrong . . . my confidence is shaken, but I am not going to abandon ship. I am still going to watch the games when I can and record some and watch later. I am still going to follow the team closely and root for success. I am still going to wear what Georgetown gear I have. Does that mean I am not upset, frustrated, mad, etc.? Hell Yes I am all of those and more. I think about it way more than I should. But if this team is ever going to be successful again, it needs support and kicking aside something you are passionate about when things are down, is not how I roll. It is why I have had the same job since 1997, the same wife for almost 25 years and why I have been coaching HS basketball since 2000, always at the same high school. Gotta stick with the Hoyas now, as we are at or approaching the depths.

As far as my feelings on coaching. I am not happy with the coaching. Not at all. JTIII is performing below my expectations and has been for years. Changes he is in the midst of making now should have been made a while ago. However, firing him now in the middle of the season, is not the answer at least IMHO. My thoughts on this are as follows: JTIII should be on very thin ice. If they do not make the NCAA tournament this year, they should make a change in April. However, he is now implementing many changes: new assistants, new system, many new players. I am willing to give this a full season to see if it works. So far it has been a s%*tstorm. However, I am going to wait until March to make my final judgment and will not be yelling "Fire Thompson" during the season. However, I understand and would not criticize those that do. I just believe he should be given one final full season to implement his changes, given his players a chance to develop under new assistants, and then evaluated accordingly in March.

One confession though . . . given the way the HOyas have played the last few years, I admit to paying attention and being much more interested in some of the secondary mid-major teams that I root for . . . my so called back up teams. I would advise all college basketball fans who are also Hoya fans to develop a secondary passion for another team in another conference. It helps mitigate the disappointments our Hoyas have bestowed upon us. I have a number of teams that I root, mostly in secondary conferences. My teams are, in no particular order and a variety of reasons: St. Mary's College (WCC), Lafayette College (Patriot), Sacramento State, Brown (Ivy), LBSU (Big West), and Texas (Big 12). When these teams succeed (and some do not succeed often), it is like medicine that makes the pain easier to handle. If you can bring yourself to do it, I suggest supporting the Hoyas, but finding at least one back up team in case this continues the rest of the year.
