cooley on the year
It wasn't a good year. And i think all these losses, i take. I gotta do a better job as a leader, and I will continue to get better. But ai thought the struggles this year helped me be a much better coach. Helped me be a better listener, more attention to detail.
It's obvious we have to add a lot more talent
cooley dapping carter and provy
im really happy for Devin being player of the year - I voted for him. I think he should also be the defensive player of the year. I voted him for that as well.
Credit Providence. They made the right plays, they withstood a run. We didn't execute from the free throw line.
What did Cooley tell his guys afterwarwd?
You have to have gratitude. We as leaders have to understand, we have young men who are emotionally distraught, know what I mean? I told them, 'Let's keep the main thing, the main thing'; 99% of college basketball players are going to need a J-O-B. And you have one of the greatest academic degrees in the world. Let's keep that as well.
You know, hug 'em up. Let them know, be open, honest and direct with them. And be real with them, don't try and B.S. your kids. They will smell that anyway. If you are open, honest and direct, your men will respect you.
I feel for them.
Cooley on going forward
We have to continue to build, to get better. the better team won today. it's not the end of world, the sun will come up tomorrow. i got a helluva job, i work for a helluva AD, work for a helluva President. We're going to move this program in the right direction.
The BIG EAST is going to be healthier, when we Georgetown gets to where we're GOING to go.
How the programs builds per Cooley
Ohh. Obviously we have to add some pieces, right? We have a really young core that's coming in. The nucleus we feel like we'll have a good nucleus and will be some carry over.
Given how our jobs are challenging now with the landscape of college athletics with the portal and NIL, we as coaches would build teams instead of programs. Hopefully the carry over with the men who will be in the locker room, can build on that culture and that philosophy.
So that's something that I'm grateful about, going into year two. Hopefully we make a big, big jump.
How did he get his guys to play hard in BIG EAST Tourney play?
This is the first time I'm going through something like this as a head coach. i had a similar situation as an assistant coach, in this building at Boston College in 1997 i believe, played against a very talented Syracuse team. Before the first media timeout, it was like 30 to two.
And again, when you;re having this type of years, it's a credit to our coaches, its a credit to our team that they still fought RIGHT to the very end. A lot of people would have thrown in the towel, a lot of people.
So ti's a credit to the culture we're building, the DNA of the men, the care of the men, the pride of the men. it just wasn't the year to write about, but it's definitely a year to learn from.
