When You Knew it Was Over

I’m curious when people knew that each of
our last 4 coaches had peaked/weren’t going to succeed (Caution - you must be over the age of fifty to answer all 4)

JT 2 - I suspected that he had peaked when his 1988 Olympic team lost because of his inflexibility, but the final nail in his coffin was the Princeton game in the NCAA Tournament in 1989. That was a 1/2 punch that I knew he would never fully recover from - even though he “coached” for another 10 years. Except for the Iverson years Thompson’s last 10 Georgetown teams weren’t good - I think that he lost his fire, and some of his confidence, after he was badly outcoached by Carril.

Esherick - This one is easy for me. February 18, 2004. That’s the day that he lost to a St John’s team with 5 scholarship players, and that at certain points in the game were playing 5 walk-ons. He was already in trouble, but this game sealed his fate.

JT3 - March 22, 2013. That’s the day that we lost to Florida Gulf Coast. Thompson had already had the Davidson, Ohio, etc NCAAT failures, and had become a punching bag for Tournament analysts, but there was no coming back from the FGCU loss. I was at that game and you could see it in his face, and hear it in his post-fame comments.

Ewing - This might be the one with the largest variety of responses, but to me it was December 2, 2019 - the day that Akinjo and LeBlanc transferred. These 2 had been all-Big East freshmen the season prior (and Akinjo was named Newcomer of the Year) and were 2 starters. Not only did they leave - they left 7 games into the next season. I knew that from then on Ewing was going to have a tougher time recruiting, and that it would be impossible for him to have any continuity with his rosters. And other than the tail-end of the 20-21 season it has been pretty much straight downhill since the 2028-2019 season. Of course Ewing has had so many disasters that there are multiple correct answers to this question.

Thanks for indulging me - I am going a little stir crazy counting the days until Ewing is gone, and then anticipating the next ill-advised coaching hire that DeGioia will make a week or 2 later.

Just curious now that McClung is trending and picked up a 2-way contract from the 76ers (which is much more significant than the previous 2-ways as the roster is basically 17 now) how you all feel about the kid.

Seems strange to think about but he spent more time at Georgetown than he did at Texas Tech. That said I assume he would rather be associated with TTU going forward and who can blame him?

what they do: sju in dc

in a nutshell

they want super quick offense. not even really secondary. then it's based on soriano providing gravity in the paint. their roster has a lot of dnp's so late in the season, but they seem to be shunting corbello and pizone to the side. hahaha

defesnviely not the pressure guys we presume. they do play soft 94 feet often, using the second defender to trap at halfcourt periodically.

zone would go a long way against these guys.

outcome?

the johnnies narrowly. i think too much soriano and gtown's guard wont run the offense deep enough in shot clock to cause the sinking they give up shots with.

Amazing podcast just ruining Ewing and DeGioia

about the 28 and a half minute mark:

Georgetown Is A Corpse

Notes:

1) DeGioia is incompetent
2) Ewing's buyout is massive
3) Ripped on them for the extension
4) Both podcasters want Georgetown to be good again
5) No reason Georgetown can't be top 25 with the talent in the DMV
6) Shaka Smart should have been the hire
7) They said Brey is a fit (yikes) because he could balance the Thompson dynamic which is complicated --- he's done better recruiting DC than Georgetown has (please god no)

the line of the podcast: St. Johns is in fetal position and Georgetown is a corpse

Why we need to get good quickly

The BE contact with Fox expires after spring 2025. With Texas, Oklahoma, USC and UCLA moves, the word I am hearing from friends of mine involved in college football TV is that the flat fee television contracts are done moving forward. The big schools are driving the bus now, at least on the football side and do not want to be stuck in a situation where they are carrying the conference the way OK and Texas were carrying the Big 12. As a result, Fox, espn, nbc etc are going to be no longer be negotiating with flat fees for every team in the conference where Vanderbilt gets the same as Bama and BC gets the same as UNC. Instead, flat fee with incentives are expected to be the new norm and the big schools are going to drive this (i.e. the ones that draw the most TV revenue). If we cannot bring our program back to prominence, or at least relevance, this could have a major impact on the ability of Gtown to draw TV revenue from its basketball program. The good news is that if we can bring the program back to prominence, we could start taking advantage of this, if these predictions are correct.
