Message for Breakdown

can you believe the meltdown Providence fans are having on Twitter

I mean sure be pissed off -- that's the name of sports when it comes to free agency or coaching departures

but now all of a sudden:

1) he's a shitty coach
2) he's cheating on his wife
3) he's immoral
4) he's a liar

Providence fans have clearly forgotten the fact that their program aggressively tried to poach JT Jr. from Georgetown and Pitino from Louisville -- I guess that was perfectly fine but what Georgetown has done is deplorable. This AD at Providence looks like an idiot to me for bringing conference ethics into play.

it's unreal

love how you keep stoking them

old coaches update

the latest with them

they haven't been fired yet. was told dont show upbto cooleys intro presser then afterward to stay away

apparently Cooley didn't want to engage with them. it's awkward

but it would be wise to plug into them to get info on what actually happened prior. easier to know what to do and not, going forward.

anyway, on the coaches:

1) Ewing is telling people he got "all his money" which is '3 years"

thought it was 1 full two partial years. still do.

2) Baldwin wants to stay. doesn't have anything right now. is owed yr (2 year contract)

3) nickelberry wants to move on. is out the door just waiting to be fired to get his money (2 yr deal). will be picked up fast

4) crouch is looking. has no years left

5) workout guy likely lands with will wade at mcneese st

6) video guy has nothing (and wasn't well liked hahaha)

recruiing approach

so things are starting to crystallize

it's looking like the Cooley Hoyas and friars will have similar recruiting approaches...a wider net

witness the offers coming down. they have been on guys they recruited at provy and others!

who is doing it?

Cooley and Thomas

locally expect all the top 20 kids in region to get offers...again a wide net like what happened in provy

this is getting interesting

2nd staff update

ok this is still rumors buttressed by observation...but is still mad speculative. hahah

so...

stevens(on) of takeover was there in part to lobby for Kenny Johnson. his biz partner and friend

bey of melo was there to help bino ransom be considered. bino has been quietly let go in the chi recently. Stubbs was told to make staff change.

also bino wants coppin hc job. shoot he wanted it when dixon was hired

trying to grab more info

the staff. latest update

ok so this is fluid

various machinations exist. the one constant right now seems thomas

battle/Blaney could/could not come

battle MAY stay at Providence
Blaney MAY be sick

also a staff position COULD be crratrd...special assistant to coach...where Blaney could land

the overwhelming PERCEPTION now is a local recruiter will be added

this is intersting

Providence is the enemy again

1987 - I attended my first Big East basketball tournament as I had been playing lacrosse for the Hoyas as an underclassman and stopped playing before my junior year.

March 6, 1987 - MSG - Georgetown had beaten BC in the BE quarterfinals in game 1. In game 2, Providence was crushing St. John's midway through the second half. Their student section, parked right next to Providence's was feeling it and erupted into a loud "Georgetown's next" chant.

Fueled by a bit of beer and my first time at the BET, I stood on my chair and mooned the entire Providence student section (I was not as laidback in my youth). Within seconds, I was surrounded by law enforcement who proceeded to kick me out a side door of Madison Square Garden onto the street (was just happy not to be arrested). My hatred for PC began that day.

As some of you may recall, we crushed Providence in the semis and then beat Cuse to win that Conference tournament. Then Providence went on to the Final Four that year beating us in the Elite Eight to get there so they got the best of us that year. To me, 1987 is when the Providence rivalry was formed.

It seems to be back again big time . . . although I am done mooning people as part of the rivalry.

It is good to be hated again!!

Cooley's roster building

so many questions like what to do with Mutombo

who comes from Providence

can we keep the three recruits from CA especially Dual

does our lone recruit decommit?

are we getting the big from TCU

that said he has internal decisions as well:

1) Primo
2) BM
3) Heath
4) Ezewiro
5) Anglin
6) Riley
7) Bass
8) Akok

I really hope Heath, Akok and Riley stay personally

I'm also very intrigued at what might happen with Ezewiro having Cooley as a coach

so many possibilities

hoyas and their portaling guys

Spears, Anglin, bass are in portal

Spears has been counseled by a trusted source this time the transfer has to be set up. he supposedly started doing that

the other 2 are frosh so they can go play immediately. neither likely to see big east level

akok is pondering moves. scheduled to graduate so if he does he can play immediately. not in portal yet

murray hasn't entered portal. yet. unsure if he's set the table so to speak

Ed Cooley: The Day After (an opinion)

I thought about Georgetown basketball a lot yesterday. The whole day was a huge relief. I knew all along that Cooley was the hire but you just cannot help yourself to admit that Georgetown and DeGioia could still screw this up. But regardless of the search and the rumors, they got it right.

All along I have posted that Pitino was my #1 followed by Cooley and then Shrewsberry. Any other name brought panic for me.

Now having a day to reflect I honestly feel that Cooley was the best hire over Pitino and anyone else.

In my estimation the new coach needed to:

1) Have complete autonomy in running his program while using resources put in place by the administration (i.e. break from the old guard)
2) Achieve #1 while still respecting the old guard
3) Reenergize the community
4) Re-engage the basketball alumni
5) Be here for the long haul
6) Re-validate this once behemoth of a program
7) Know how to coach
8) Know how to relate to the younger generation of players

It was going to take a special individual to accomplish all of the above and in my estimation Ed Cooley is the only one who does

1) Autonomy: pretty clear that with the building being cleaned that Cooley will have the autonomy. It also seems that Lee Reed is now there to help him as needed. I think this was going to happen for any coach

Achieved: it appears so

2) Respect the old guard: tricky one here. We all know Cooley does. Pitino would have stated he did but in reality he couldn't care less. I don't think Shrewsberry probably even knew the old guard but I'm sure there was a level of respect there considering what JT2 meant for the future of black coaches.

Achieved: yes and Cooley does it the best of the three

3) Re-energize the community: again they would all do this to some level because it's not Ewing and the old guard.

Achieved: yes but to what level. All three did this

4) Re-engage the basketball alumni: to me this is where Cooley starts to separate himself. Don't think Pitino needs to. Don't think Shrewsberry has the chops/history to. But as we all have heard that seemed to be priority #1 for Cooley and that tells me something. Knowing a few ex-players personally, I know that there are relationships with Cooley and a huge level of respect.

Achieved: already done by Cooley and to me this is so massive

5) Be here for the long haul: again this is where Cooley separates himself. This would be Pitino's swan song and where would that leave us in 3-5 years? If Shrewsberry came I could see Georgetown as a stepping stone to a true blue blood if he achieved success (side note: shouldn't DePaul be backing up the brinks truck for him?). But Cooley seemingly is in for the long haul. This was always his dream job and I think this is where he retires.

Achieved: in my opinion Cooley is the best here

6) Re-validate the program: I think all three do to some level. Lots of work to be done but I think all three would have their own levels of success.

Achieved: talking to my friends who had given up there is still trepidation but true excitement for the first time in a long while

7) Know how to coach: again all three achieve this. I've devoured Cooley coaching videos and following Georgetown over the last decade or so it's eye-opening. The man knows what he's doing and that's saying something given our history.

Achieved: in a big way. If you think logically this is the first coach in Georgetown high major history that has a P6 success story. Pops came from high school. Esh came from Pops. JT3 came from nepotism/a mid-major. Ewing came from nepotism and the lack of any knowledge in how to run a college basketball program. Cooley ticks all the boxes more efficiently than the other two. That said, I was very impressed watching Penn St and the way they played.

8) Knows how to relate to younger players. I think Cooley and Shrewsberry absolutely do and I think Pitino is such a legend the respect is sort of built in but I can't speak to the ability to relate to young recruits in the DMV

Achieved: yes. watching videos of Cooley proved this to me

Conclusion: I think for sure Pitino would have been the splashiest hire. He was the front page pic on ESPN yesterday not Cooley. He gets the social media and sports shows buzzing if he was the hire. And that lasts about 2-3 days until the work begins. And that is where Cooley shines for Georgetown. I actually think Cooley feasts in the DMV more than Pitino would have. There are so many layers to the Georgetown job but the rebranding is one of the most important. The program needs rebranding for fans, players and ex-players alike. I think Cooley achieves those three better than the other two candidates.

Now of course the results will validate or invalidate everything I've written above. But after a day's reflection, I truly believe Cooley was the best coach for this job when you take into account all factors.

some inside into providence

got this from a well placed source

all was not gravy with Cooley and PC

so let's flash back to 19-20. friars were fairly hot. big year. then covid shut it down finished 19-12

prior to that year they made tourney 5 of 6 years

so year after covid friars went 13 and 13. Cooley was told afterward to make staff changes. he Refused. apparently Cooley is really loyal

next year hes coach of year, wins big east reg season, goes to tourney

this year tourney. and bounces

bottomline it wasn't all happy happy joy joy up there

hahaha
