1) this evans guy is clearly dynamic and makes the pokes go. can he be stopped/slowed, and if so, how?
Through 5 games, the answer has been no. He’s averaging 27.0 points per game, with a high of 35 and low of 13. The 13 game in a blowout win over New Orleans, where he only played 19 minutes. Evans was very dynamic as a true freshman last season, and it’s apparent he’s matured even more this year.
2) who else can give evans help? forte? the young forward?
Forte, typically. He struggled to get open at all against UNC, going 0 for 3 from the field in last night’s game. That’s generally going to be bad news for this Cowboy team. Beyond Forte, combo guard/forward Jeffrey Carroll has stepped up his game from last year and is averaging 16.4 ppg. True freshman forward Cameron McGriff has had his moments so far this season, but hasn’t had a huge impact yet. I think that he’ll develop as a weapon for the Pokes steadily through the season.
3) have the pokes played any zone this year?
I haven’t seen every second of every game, but I haven’t seen any zone. Quite frankly, given Brad Underwood’s background, I don’t expect to.
4) what's the feeling on the team and poke nation?
There’s a good deal of excitement about Underwood and the direction of the program under him. Much like the ESPN commentators mentioned numerous times the last two nights, there’s a sense that this team is much better than their preseason ranking of 7th in the Big 12 Conference. They’re probably not a conference title contender just yet, but will likely show improvement most of the year and could be by the end of the season.
