Survey says: Passion comes through from Georgetown fans

Last week, we flipped on the bulldog-silhouetted bat signal and aimed it toward the D.C. night skies, putting out a call Hoyas fans to participate in our first Georgetown fan survey. Nearly 350 of you rose to meet that call.
As we wrote in the introduction to the survey, it feels like a fascinating time to be a Georgetown men’s basketball fan, a moment marked by confusion and promise and nostalgia and emotional resonance and disappointment — a crossroads in many ways. Naturally, we were super interested in seeing where you all stood on this stuff right now, how you felt about the team’s progress, about Patrick Ewing’s three seasons at the school, your favorite and least favorite things about your beloved program, and so forth. (We also got some excellent coverage feedback. So thank you for that.)
(Note: if you’re having trouble reading the questions or responses, click on the chart and it’ll enlarge.)
Here’s what you had to say.
You guys are here, which means you really care, which is why it’s never a surprise to see respondents in these fan surveys leaning so much toward serious fandom. Of course, right? Still, this is why it’s so fun to do our job: You guys really know your stuff too.
This is a pretty healthy spread! We’ve seen other fan bases trending a bit older than this, but you guys are all over the map, in a good way …
… which is perhaps why not quite as many of you as expected got on board during the 1980s glory days. Plenty of you did, of course; that’s when Georgetown basketball became Georgetown basketball. But the age profile splits necessitate a little variety here, because some of you (like Eamonn, ahem) simply weren’t old enough to remember Patrick Ewing in his pomp. Fortunately, you’ve had more than a few good years of basketball since, with great players and quality teams to fuel new generations of fans.
Shouts out to two or three people who both a) didn’t watch a Georgetown basketball game last season but also b) took the time to fill out a Georgetown fan survey on a subscription-based sports web site. That’s tremendous. The rest of you trended toward die-hard fandom, not surprisingly, with nearly 50 percent of you watching anywhere between 21 games and every game.
No pressure, Qudus. Hopes are also high for Jamorko Pickett, and understandably so; he remains a player with big apparent potential every time you see him, even if he’s already a rising senior and hasn’t ever quite put it together. Wahab, on the other hand, just had a really nice freshman season, played a bunch more minutes than anyone probably expected (himself included) and flashed great touch around the rim. He might have been the most exciting part of Georgetown’s 2019-20 season, in some ways.
Meanwhile, more than a few of you wrote in that you didn’t think the team would have a star. One of you wasn’t sure the team had any players, period.
