fall practice report: day 10.1.24

was a physical session. the guys are being tasked with being so. staff knows team will have to score and rebound widely, while easy buckets are a premium. as such coaches are leaning into fast break, rebounding, helping defensively.

after some shooting around

cooley - we're going to start seperating ourselves...so when it's time to make a decison, it's a hard one for us (coache)

players are being stressed, evaluated and notations made. jobs are on the line. they are still teaching, but guys are expected to get it.

Big East as a National Basketball-Centric Super Conference Takes A Huge Hit

As consolidation and conference realignment continues, I had high hopes that the Big East would help protect itself by becoming a two division (East and West) basketball super conference by adding 5-7 mid western and western based traditional basketball schools such as Gonzaga, SMC, Grand Canyon, USF, Santa Clara, LMU, Pepperdine, Pacific and maybe even Dayton and/or Davidson if you can figure out how to manage their football programs. To me, if you have 16 to 18 teams in the conference you can limit travel by dividing the conference into West and East and playing a schedule that mostly matches up with teams in your division.

However, with Gonzaga going to the Pac 12 and that conference in talks with both GCU and SMC, the possibility of this arrangement having some strategic advantage becomes much less likely and therefore the benefits of doing it are highly diminished when you cannot get the best basketball schools in the west that do not play football. Today's news likely ends any such hopes I had for this change.

Fall practice 9.27 day 1 notes

So I'll be adding to this

to be clear, this was the FIRST official practice of this 2024-25 season.

Cosches are ratcheting up the pressure and intensity

They coached them hsrd and e erratically

Injuries are starting to toll

Epps was held out

Julius/seal both didn't play as expected

Mukteady didn't f8nushbthr session...a bad wheel

As a grouping, think the 2 bigs played best overall

fall workouts: 9.23

generally

they are gradually implementing more blobs/slobs.

starting to put in a zone press

still working 5out variations

man defense still drilled. on nail and help principles

pace is picking up, as is the pressure applied...like having to sink fts before water or run.

players

nobody beasted per set, but several dudes did fairly well

epps - no there
julius h - watched
seal - watched
sorber - was solid
fielder - playing with more energy and effort
mulready - is pushing for the first guard off bench/steady eddie and possibly the perimeter defensive stopper role.
c will - not a good practice. has to seize the perimeter defense guy off the bench role.
caleb - is sneakily making plays in practice. still not looking like a big minute guy (if everything goes well) this season
burks - not a good practice. needs to focus
mason moses (walk on) - the most productive of the pay to play crew, all summer and this fall. competed well. extended minutes due to no epps
mack - pull up game was on. talking when on the floor (not just sidelines) is necessary
peavy - the adult. didnt shoot much.
fort - is working hard on perimeter skills during redshirt year
