okay, checking out the ok state unc maui invitational game:
offensively on pokes
juwan evans makes them go. period. is dynamic with the ball in his hands, can shoot and drive. will dish as well. green light and can make it happen. had 30 vs unc.
when their 2 3 motion offense (high) breaks down or stagnates...it's evans' time. this cat ranks in high major ball: second, ninth and first with 26.3 points, 6.4 assists and 3.5 steals per game. He's a beast.
that 2 3 offense creates natural cutting, driving lanes...puts your bigs away from the cup.
will so ball screen for evans. as they should.
the forte guy is a semi shooter...doesn't make as much as the hype to me, but he can play. is touch.
how do you address that?
not sure doubling really gets the ball out of his hands. well, i know it wont full court. so maybe do it periodically.
trick is NEVER to let him get a sliver. communicate on help, it's necessary. try and bump him, play physically. and make him defend (good passing lane guy but not the best on ball guy. not terrible, but not exceptional.
pokes love quick offense...means communication and transition defense are a MUST! this evans guy will come down, if he can's score or find a quick pass, reset. again, stay with him. he will hit baseline, pass out ,and then curl (lift). don't let him get pass. basically try and deny.
dont meet evans too high though...if you do stay in front. if not, dude is gonna make it happen.
multiple defenders on this guy is a must. tire this guy out...he does everyting.
i would mix zone in..don't think the hoyas can stay in front of this guy, and the help has been suspect this year.
attack forte and other defenders.
basically the hoyas must be agressive.
take away early offense...they get undisciplined as the shot clock decreases.
defensively on pokes
they run man defense, aggressive ball side, sagging weak. will also trap in half court, and overplay. so far from what i see, nominal full court pressure. token at best. from what i see so far.
are quick as a team, ahve a budding young forward whose bouncy. in fact, have a number of bouncy guys, just not a lot of htem. they will rebound and challenge shots.
How do you address that?
the pokes are rather slight up front and not deep there...so they can/are susceptible to inside play.
Post, post, post. they have no real answer.
also, if a forward is on pryor..he has to pop out and shoot.
make sure to take away early.
put peak in ball screen action..and then exploit that AS WELL AS the roll. pokes bigs can' handle that.
carolina had some success with their carolina break...poke's transition defense is suspect. run. which means you need to get stops and rebounds!
skips should create offense, as the pokes are not that good recovering right now.
