Dartmouth NLRB ruling

It’s just the beginning. In 5-7 years, or sooner, student athletes in revenue generating sports will be considered employees under the law.

I mean Dartmouth does not even offer scholarships and the program, which is generally at the bottom of the Ivy League does not generate a profit. Yet its players were found to be employees.

As I have said here before, the NIL money is only the tip of the iceberg. The real profound change in big time college athletics is still on the horizon, and approaching fast.

Interesting

Hoya Saxa quoted Matt Norlander as saying the following:

Norlander suggests the rebuild at Georgetown was visible to anyone outside the program, but few within it, noting "a place with notorious dysfunction and outdated practices on how to operate a men's basketball program."

"There are factors working in his favor and against," he continued. "He has a fantastic recruiting territory, but Georgetown has the worst home environment in the Big East. He'll never have in D.C. what he built at [Providence]. Georgetown is a job with a high ceiling, but the place is not wired for a quick turnaround. If Cooley gets the Hoyas into the NCAA Tournament by Year 3, it would be astounding. Will he have the patience for it? If we check in two years from now and Cooley is on his way to another season at or below .500, what then?"

Hmm

game report and a few quotes...at provy

How did Cooley feel seeing Carter go off?

A little bit of me was pissed at him. But a lot of me was happy for his success. You don't just recruit kids and forget about them...We're human. We have emotions and feelings. And right now I feel bad for the men of Georgetown. Not Providence.

Cooley on moving on

(After expressing gratitude copiously, Cooley noted "it's on to the next chapter in my life. And I'm looking forward to that chapter as it will be the best chapter in that book".

24-25 Roster Construction

As it stands now, we have the following on the books for next season.

Seniors
Mutombo
Cook
Styles
Bristol
Juniors
Epps
Sophomores
Fielder
Brumbaugh
Freshman
McKenna
Sorber
Williams
Mulready

We are on the hook for 11 scholarships next year as of right now. So at the very least they have room to add 2 portal guys. That said, I would be shocked if there are no transfers out. Statistically, nearly every D1 team has attrition.

Too early to speculate on portal guys. There will still be a few guys out there with covid years to play, so could get some 5th-6th year vets. After their freshman year seems to be when a lot of guys leave, so I'd imagine that Fielder/Brumbaugh won't be the only ones with sophomore eligibility.

A lot has been rumored that Georgetown is gonna be a major player ($$ wise) in the portal. I really hope so. I think this year has reinforced for Cooley just how much he needs "his kinda guys" in there. The current team is talented, but maybe doesn't have that hard/tough edge that Cooley really wants.
