I have read a lot of different thread about recruiting and next year.
In my view, Cooley should be looking to recruit over every player he has on this roster. Based on statements I have heard him make, he intends to do that. He knows he has to improve quickly and if there are players that can help us immediately in the portal that he can secure, I am confident he will attempt to get there. Nobody has a guaranteed role next year.
Personally, I do not care if we have Epps. If a better combo guard becomes available, we should be recruiting him. I do not care that we have Sorber coming in, if a better experienced 4 comes available in the portal and we have a shot, go after him. I do not care that Styles shows potential to be a very good Big East wing. If a top wing becomes available in the portal, go get him.
We need to improve this roster. We need a ton more depth (part of the reason this and a team that is on pace to win 2-5 conference games and has no first team all conference performers cannot be picky in the portal. The way I see it, we have the following guys coming back and coming in next year, assuming no key players transfer out (wonder whether Mutombo and Montgomery will both be back):
PG Brumbaugh
Combo Guard Epps
Combo Guard to Wing - Mulready
Wing McKenna
Wing Styles
WIng Montgomery (although I assume he is gone)
Combo F - Williams
PF-Post Fielder
PF-Post Sorber
C Mutombo
C Cook
From my perspective we need to find the best players available that we can sign in the portal regardless of position. Our biggest needs do appear to be be
1. A pure point guard
2. Another wing/SF
3. A long defensive minded post player
However, even though PF is not a huge area of need, if a top power forward became available who is likely to immediately start over Sorber or Fielder, I would grab him - especially if he was a grad transfer with one year of eligibility left.
I think this team above is capable of improvement over this year's team (replacing Ish bristol and Heath with Mckenna, Mulready, Sorber and Williams essentially). However, I do not think it is likely to make an NIT or NCAA tournament and compete at the top half of the Big East. How we do in the transfer market is going to be crucial.
