Two big positives from this weekend: (1) Hayes has a real chance to have a Henry Sims type breakout season next year and could be a solid offensive player and a great defender. He did so many little things on d the last two games, without fouling. I was pleasantly amazed. (2) the old Peak returned v Utah. To me he has as much potential as Copeland. If he can do what trawick did the last off season to develop his shot they will have to guard him to 21 feet and tHen he becomes real dangerous.
The biggest reason for our lack of success this year was that Josh did not come close to his potential. He was too heavy and did not consistently play hard or smart. He was our best option but if he was 30 lbs lighter and played with some consistent intensity (along with better smarts re how to play when in foul trouble), we would have been a top ten or15 team and likely moved on to sweet 16. Of course what ifs don't get u anywhere and to be a top level athlete u need exceptional physical and mental tools. Josh just did not seem to have the exceptional motivation required.
Overall there have been some really great games in this tourney. Setting hoyas loss aside opening weekend of ncaas is better than Christmas to me.
