Hoyas beat a Swiss pro team 76-73, story linked below.
Excerpt
That set up an exciting final two minutes with four lead changes. Peak hit two free throws to give GU a 72-71 lead with 1:23 left. Vardel hit a jumper to make it 73-72 SAM Basket, but a layup from Derrickson gave the Hoyas the lead for good, 74-73, with 43 seconds left. After a missed 3-ponter from Seth Gearhart, Derrickson grabbed the rebound and White was fouled with 12 seconds left, giving GU a 76-73 lead. A 3-pointer in the waning seconds was rebounded by freshman forward Kaleb Johnson (Short Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) as Georgetown held on for the win.
-----------------
A few things stand out to me from the paragraph above about the last :90 seconds of the game.
1. Peak and White each went 2/2 on FTs with the game on the line
2. Freshman Derrickson was in, got a key board and hit a layup to give GU its final lead
3. Fellow Frosh Kaleb Johnson was also in the game and got a key board.
That is not to suggest anything at all about who will be starting, who will get minutes, etc. But it does say coach had enough confidence in those freshmen to leave them in with the game on the line and they came through. Kids learn from that, gain confidence in themselves, and the rest of the team gains confidence in them too. Coach often talks about who is in at the end of games being more important than who starts. Finally, LJ and Paul hit key FTs under pressure.
The conclusion I draw from the above, is both Kaleb and Marcus are in line to earn spots in the rotation going forward. Sounds to me like a great trip and bonding experience. Within the team, it was a coming out party for the new guys. Should be a fascinating year. All we really need is to score one more big time recruit for the following year... Woods? Brown? Jones?
