This and That: DePaul

Following are observations relevant to Georgetown's 74-63 defeat of DePaul on Saturday.

Insider work

The Hoyas shot 16 three balls in the first half, 15 during the game's last 20 minutes, producing six and five makes, respectively. Despite that statistical near equality, head coach John Thompson III said afterward " I thought in the first half we were just passing around, shooting threes". Resultantly " Particularly in the second half, we wanted to make a conscious effort to go the rim, go to the rim", via drive, pick and roll find or entry pass.

The result? In part blame G'Town's 46-33 second half scoring advantage to that focus. Certainly tag it's 24 (of 31 total) free throws during the last 20 minutes to pushing the rock inside.

"Like I've said this several times, we have guys that can make those" three pointers, noted Thompson, who did admit 32 three point attempts was excessive, though his team didn't shoot many bad ones. DePaul, who packs the point defensively, therefore opening up shots after drive and kick invited that, "but we have to get to the rim. So I just think our penetration got us to the foul line".

His Blue Demon counterpart, Dave Leitao recognized G'Town's inside push, saying "It's part of their offense. They try and get the ball underneath your defense at 15, 8, 12, those type of things. And then inside-out basketball to three point shooters. I thought they did a really good job today - they made 11 threes, a lot of them as a result of pick and roll penetration or post touches and kick outs, and we weren't real good in our rotations".

A main protagonist of Thompson's inside/out plan was senior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The 6'3" lead guard regularly got the rock in the paint after halftime, many times out of pick and roll action. Thompson was proud of his eight assists, work done while also scoring 17, game leading points and committing zero turnovers.

Pressing up

Normally the Hoyas press judiciously, almost as a change of pace. Against DePaul, it was a mainstay.

" Yes, that was part of the plan from the very beginning. And I thought it was very effective" revealed Thompson of his 1-2-2 (primary) and a few times 2-1-2 zone presses. "I think we got a little tired, I want to say midway through the second half, so we came out of it for a stretch and went back to it at the end and pulled away. Without a doubt I planned on sticking with it today".

Leitao admitted G'town put his team on its heels "a little bit", as "We weren't as aggressive as I talked about in practice and what we needed to be".
